MFY Connects

Music for Youth is known for championing young musicians.

It’s what we do.

MFY Connects (formerly known as the National Partnership Awards) takes this one step further by brokering musical development activities for young musicians, delivered by leading music industry partners.
From professional ensembles to conservatoires, and from specialist national bodies to world class concert venues, this programme offers one-off exclusive development opportunities designed to inspire young musicians and their teachers. These experiences can range from sending in a professional conductor for a day of workshops, through to spending a day in a recording studio recording a group’s first EP, and are tailored to each recipient.

How does it work?
As part of each National Festival session, our National Festival Music Mentors nominate groups onto a shortlist for each partnership. Music for Youth then make the final selections in consultation with the industry partners, and announce the groups here on our website in September. After a special celebration bringing all partners and selected groups together, which this year will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 11 October 2017, the groups and their industry partners are then invited to work together over the coming year. Previous activities have ranged from specialist coaching and side-by-side rehearsals with professional musicians, through to personalised mentoring with high-profile composers.

“Our experience with Music for Youth has meant so much for ‘Gutted!’ as a group. After years of playing at the festival it was really exciting to have our hard work and dedication rewarded...Our partnership with the Musicians’ Union has allowed us to achieve things we never thought possible, with a workshop with our favourite viol consort ‘Fretwork’ and an opportunity to be professionally recorded in a studio.” Kit Marshall, ‘Gutted!’ Viol Consort
