What is Music for Youth?
Music for Youth is an educational charity with a worldwide reputation for its work in music education. It provides free access to educational and performance opportunities for all kinds of groups of young musicians through a nationwide annual programme of festivals and concerts including the National Festival of Music for Youth and Schools Prom.
Are Music for Youth events competitive?
Music for Youth events are not competitions. All those taking part have the opportunity to improve their performance skills and develop their confidence through performing in public. There is open access to all at every level of accomplishment.
How do we enter our group?
You can enter a group in the National Festival of Music for Youth online or by requesting a printed entry form. Entries open in September for the following year's festival series.
Who may enter?
The National Festival of Music for Youth is open to all types of UK based youth music groups. Performers should be 21 years and under.
The Festival is not open to solo performers or performers outside the UK. There are categories for every type of ensemble and the age limits vary according to the category.
When is the closing date for entries?
The closing date for entries for the National Festival of Music for Youth is
in December. You may prefer to send in a recorded entry, the closing date for this is the beginning of March.
When are selections made for the National Festival and Schools Prom?
Up to 300 groups from the Regional Festivals and recorded entries are invited to the National Festival in July. Selections are made during April and May and all participants from the Regional Festival Series are informed in writing of the National Festival selections. Selected groups are then posted on the website.
Approximately 30 groups from the National Festival are invited to take part in the Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, London in November. Selections are made at the end of July and groups are informed in writing and posted on the website.
Why are there time limits on performances?
Music for Youth receives over 1,500 entries for its festivals each year. In order to give as many ensembles as possible the chance to participate it is necessary to apply time limits to performances. If time limits were extended, fewer ensembles would be able to participate.
Can we still enter if we cannot get to a Regional Festival?
Yes, groups may enter the National Festival of Music for Youth by sending a recorded entry.
Can soloists or groups from outside the UK take part in Music for Youth events?
Music for Youth events are not open to solo performers or performers from outside the UK.

If music has given you pleasure during your life and you wish to hand this on to future generations, then a legacy is the perfect way to donate. Please

How can I become a Sponsor/Supporter/Friend of Music for Youth?
Providing wide-ranging access to educational and performance opportunities for so many young people, mostly from the state maintained sector, is only possible through the financial support and backing of major business, educational organisations and charitable foundations.
Sponsorship and donations also enable Music for Youth to organise a programme of free concerts for inner-city pupils, which provides over 18,000 children aged from
4 to 11 years with their first visit to a world-class concert hall to hear music of all kinds performed entirely by their peer group.
